Alajuela is the hometown of national hero and drummer boy Juan Santamaria who sacrificed his own life to save the country in the battle of Hacienda Santa Rosa in 1856. Every year in April, the city is bustling with festival activities on the Juan Santamaria day. Alajuela is the second largest city of Costa Rica in size and is located around 20 km northwest of San Jose, the capital. The city is close to attractions and the locals are a friendly and relaxed bunch. Also known as Villa Hermosa and La Lajuela, the city of Alajuela was once even the capital of Costa Rica for a short period.
