Heredia was first founded in 1570 under the name of Cubujuqui. In 1763 the city adopted its current name. Heredia is situated in the north-central region of Costa Rica. Famously known to be the home of the largest college in the country by the name of The National University of Costa Rica it is no wonder that the city is beaming with life. Also often referred to as the Ciudad de las Flores, named after the wealthy Flores family who used to dominate the political and social life in Heredia during the 19th century. During the 1830s, Heredia briefly served as the capital of Costa Rica.
The central mountain range of the country is made up of several volcanoes and Heredia is close to some of them. The city’s area is known for its coffee, eco tourism and the overall cosmopolitan feel to it. Many foreigners have settled in Heredia and real estate is cheaper compared to other regions in Costa Rica and if one can limit themselves to live like a local they can life quite cost effectively without spending a fortune.
